Most articles you read about self-storage safety is about keeping your personal belongings safe.
We forget that we should remember to keep ourselves safe while we are storing our items.
Below is a list of tips on keeping yourself safe during the self-storage process:
Keep Hydrated
While we are packing and moving items we can get involved so much that we can forget to take a
break and get a drink. During the summer, we are more likely to suffer from heat exhaustion and
dehydration. Drink plenty of water and electrolytes while you are moving items around. It’s a good
idea to bring a cooler with some bottled water and electrolyte sports drink with you. Some symptoms
of dehydration are dizziness, sleepiness, thirst and headache. If you suffer from these symptoms,
take a break, get something to drink and seek medical attention immediately if needed.
Back Injuries
Moving items around Inappropriately can cause unwanted injuries, especially back injuries. Lifting
with your legs and not with your back is a way to avoid a back injury. A person can also wear a back
support brace. A back support brace can help support the back and help you to properly lift a heavy
item.
Security
Keep your security/gate code confidential. This is your key to the facility. If an unwanted person gets
into the facility they could cause vandalism to the property or to an individual’s property and also leaves
the opportunity open for someone to be a victim of burglary. If you believe that your code may have been
obtained by an unauthorized source, contact the facility manager right away. If you see suspicious activity
notify the manager of the facility right away. Do not approach someone, the manager will report it to the
proper authorities. To protect your unit from burglary you should purchase a good lock. A disc lock is the
most popular and secure lock to use for prevention of burglary. Talk to your facility manager for advice
on different locks.
